Enkh Jargal
Official Name: Enhjargal Dandarvaanchig
(Short form: Epi)
He plays the Mongolian horse head violin "Morin hoor"
Undertone and overtone singing and chanting
("Harhiraa", or "Höömii")
Epi, the magical wonder voice from Mongolia, moves
from one culture to another. With his virtuosity on the Morin hoor
and vocal perfection (undertones and overtones), he loves
to combine his traditional roots with modern western style music and improvisation. It only takes the opening beats and sounds and his audience are already carried away by the wonderful sights and smells of the wide Mongolian steppe. It’s pure sensual pleasure.
While studying, Epi already played in his first Morin hoor quintet on Mongolian television and travelled with different state ensembles through the country to maintain the Mongolian folk music. Through his family background (Epi's father moved to the country side to breed horses, whereby he also has his share), Epi is deeply rooted with the traditional and nomadic mentality of his people.
In 1993, he came to Germany for the first time with the group "Altain Orgil", where he got to know Rüdiger Oppermann.
For the last nine years, he has performed with Rüdiger in numerous concerts, not only in Germany,
but also in other European countries and in the USA.
The last concert tour led him to the Swiss Expo '02, which took him to places like Madrid,
Grand Canaria, and Paris, to mention only a few. Besides that,
he was and is gladly seen again and again as a guest musician or singer
for different projects: he celebrates the Mongolian HipHop with Peter Götzmann,
and in duet with Rainer Granzin he likes to show his jazzier side.
He has been able therefore to perfect his ability to improvize and produce
a music and style that is new and unique to him.
With his own interpretation of Mongolian folk music,
he has also started to perform solo.
Besides appearing on several CD recordings as a guest musician,
in 2002 he brought out his first solo CD ("Hoirr Öngö").
Since 2003 he regularly performs with Lex van Someren. The voices of both of these singers complement each other in an extraordinary and harmonious way. A hearing experience that captures you!
Epi was born in 1968 in Ulaanbaalar/Mongolia and grew up in Altanbulag, a small village near the Russian border. He studied at the music conservatory in Ulaanbaatar (1990-1992). His teacher was professor G. Jamjan, the most famous and best Morin hoor master of Mongolia.
